As generic as it may seem, there is truly no better way to appreciate our ascension into a new year and conquest of the old year than to highlight and give analysis of the events, happenings and achievements passed.

This year was the year for the movies. We were introduced to new characters and rekindled our love with old characters but most of all we contributed immensely to making the box office shake when we moved in solidarity with a movie.

These movies spotlighted below did not only do well by raking in millions for their franchise and breaking the box office, they also did well in the eyes of the critics and the masses.

 

Finding Dory 

This movie takes us back to the extraordinary life under water as witnessed in the original movie. Reunited with her loved ones, the friendly blue tang fish and her family go on a journey to rediscover the essence and meaning of family. This Pixar and Walt Disney animation accumulated N153,061,272,595 ($486,295,561) at the box office. Members of the cast include Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and Ed O’Neill.

Captain America: Civil War

Captain Steve Rogers leads the newly-formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After an incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, there is pressure to make the team accountable to a body and this fractures the Avengers, dividing them into two camps. Team one is led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. The Marvel movie amassed N128,444,506,011 ($408,084,349) at the box office. Members of the cast include Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson.

Jungle Book

In this remake of the classic Jungle Book, Mowgli is a human boy adopted by a pack of wolves. He is forced out of his home by villain and tiger Shere Khan. This journey leads him through the jungle he has known all his life and the new place he is to call home, all the while preparing him for the tough and innovative decisions he must make to save his home and family. This Walt Disney Film recorded N114,569,353,403 ($364,001,123) at the box office. Members of the cast include Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley and Idris Elba.

Deadpool

Former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, has been given accelerated healing powers after a rogue experiment. Now Deadpool, he is armed with new abilities, a dark sense of humour and plans to revenge the man who nearly cost him his life. This unconventional Marvel movie acquired N114,276,505,657 ($363,070,709) at the box office. Members of the cast include Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano and Leslie Uggams.

Zootopia

Zootopia is a city like no other, the modern mammal metropolis is a melting pot where animals from every environment live together and you can become anything. Rookie Officer Judy Hopps is determined to prove her position on the force as the first bunny on the police force. She partners with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde to solve the mystery.  This Walt Disney animation made N107,414,181,058 ($341,268,248) at the box office. Members of the cast include Jason Bateman, Shakira, Ginnifer Goodwin and Idris Elba.
