Are there any tennis enthusiasts here? A new gem has sprung up in the heart of Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos and it’s definitely a place I recommend for individuals, friends and family to check out. I’ve been looking for a place, not located in a residential estate to play and was recently introduced to Luik Luik Tennis & Recreation Centre which opened recently.

I was super excited to visit the centre earlier this week for a game of tennis and dinner with friends. It had been so long since I played tennis so it was fun to get back on the court, sweat buckets and get my butt kicked. Now all I can think about is going back to regain my title.

Tennis is a great form of cardio-vascular training and is also a really good way to socialise while playing a singles or doubles game. It requires strength, agility, quick response and stamina to excel in the sport. So, if you’re reading this and thinking, I dislike traditional gym exercises, tennis might be a great option for you.

Nestled in the heart of Lekki Phase 1, the centre consists of tennis courts and a state of the art clubhouse. There are trainers and coaches available to help club members hone their game and special tennis clinics for members, kids and adults from experienced tennis professionals; I was humbled by one of the trainers during my visit that was nice enough to not rub it in my face.

Off the court, there is a large restaurant and lounge area that offers a wide variety of food and drinks, with both “fitfam” and not so “fitfam” selections, so pick wisely!

If you decide to go try it out, let me know, send a message on social media or send an e-mail and perhaps I’ll be able to come around and knock some balls around with you. Enjoy your game…SET POINT, YOU!

Set Point, Match

•    The term tennis emerged from the French term ‘tenez’.

•    Before the use of rackets in tennis, people actually used their palms to hit the ball.

•    The palm method was replaced in the 1500s when rackets were introduced.

•    For the first hundred years, modern-day tennis was played, the strings of the racquets were made from animal guts.

•    Serena Williams and her sister Venus both won Olympic gold medals for tennis. They are the first set of sisters to accomplish this.

•    The longest match was 11 hours and five minutes long. It took place over a period of three days.

•    Originally, the court was an hour-glass shape, in 1875 rectangular courts were created for Wimbledon.
